Our school is heading in the right direction

Students at our school are given the opportunity to develop self-confidence, have respect for the views of others and feel safe, according to the latest Ofsted report.

Bullying is rare and diversity is a strength of our school which is also benefiting from  strengthened governance after the creation of an Interim Executive Board in September of last year.

“Provision for pupils’ personal development and welfare is good. Pupils are provided with a wide range of high-quality and effective support,” says the report.

“The advice and guidance that pupils receive mean that they are well prepared for the next stage of their education,” it adds.

The leadership team has also been left with areas on which to concentrate in order to continue moving the school from its current ‘requires improvement’ to ‘good’ and work has already started on that aim.

“We are grateful to parents and carers for their continued support and to our students who are also working to ensure we continue to raise the bar of expectation and ensure Meridian HIgh School is the very best it can be,” said headteacher Martin Giles.

“Our leaders have a determination to build resilience and instil a sense of value in each and every one of our students and look forward to a bright future,” he added.

The report follows a visit to our school from the Ofsted inspection team in April and it highlights how safe our students feel, including online, and the fact that there is a team of support staff if they experience difficulties.

“Leaders have a strong understanding of the needs of pupils whose circumstances may make them vulnerable,” the report noted.

Classroom displays are bright and purposeful while most students wear their uniform with pride and, despite the large school site, are punctual to their lessons.

Areas of improvement to assist the school in moving to a ‘Good’ status includes improving teaching, learning and assessment; improving student attendance and behaviour and improving leadership.

“Rest assured that we agree with the judgement of the inspectors and will remain tightly focused on making our school even better,” said Mr Giles.
