MHS Students at Rotary Youth Speaks

Rotary Youth Speaks Competition

On a wild, wet and windy Wednesday 7th November, three brave Year 9 students took part in the annual Rotary Youth Speaks competition, hosted by the Royal Russell school. Organised by the local Rotary Clubs in Croydon, the Youth Speaks competition seeks to help develop the faculties of young people, and, in particular, sets out to offer;

  • The experience of speaking on a public platform
  • The incentive to formulate ideas on significant subjects
  • The discipline of dealing with a set topic in a limited time
  • An opportunity of learning from others’ high standards of expression, presentation and appearance
  • The benefit of impartial assessment and impartial criticism

The competition was extraordinary, with five other Croydon schools entering at least one team each. A draw was directed before proceedings began, and Meridian High School were picked to present in second place. Though nerves were high, Emilia, Tommy-Lee and Jaik presented fantastically. They were clear, insightful and used a little bit of humour to go a long way. Despite the fact that they did not win the intermediate stage (congratulations must go to Old Palace of John Whitgift School) they did themselves and the school proud. They are now, more than ever, keen to enter again next year and this time, take home the win.
