Year 7 Netball Tournament

On Friday afternoon, Mr Costi and Miss Pearson accompanied Meridian High’s year 7 girls to take part in a Croydon borough schools netball tournament organised by Croydon Schools Sports Partnership.

Flying the Meridian flag for our year 7’s were (captain) Kacey Blundell, Kamaria Forrest, Mollie Ferguson, Lilly Fadden , Jamelia Reid, Lashante Johnson and new recruit Paige Thorpe.

The year 7’s were competing against the likes of Croydon High School, Oasis Academy Coulsdon, Coloma Convent Girls' School, Harris Academy South Norwood, Riddlesdown Collegiate and Oasis Academy Arena.

The games were organised as a round robin tournament, with every team playing a 12 minute game against every school.

With an all-round determination from the Meridian year 7 girls to put Meridian High on the map, they all gave a valiant and well spirited effort, considering as it was their first Netball tournament.

Win, lose or draw the year 7 girls went into all six games with the outcome of netball experience against other schools. After every game the girls shock hands and gave three cheers to the opposing team and then gave themselves feedback to move on for the next game.

The final standings saw the year 7 girls of Meridian High finish 6th overall! With all players giving their best effort on the day, new recruit Paige Thorpe was the stand out player receiving the tournament player award for Meridian High. Paige’s enthusiasm and effort did not go unrecognised and considering it was Paige’s first time playing a netball match within a secondary school, Paige did not stop running!

The Year 7 Girls Netball Team should be proud of themselves for taking part and competing against Croydon’s finest netball teams.

As an added bonus, our very own netball coach, Miss Pearson, received the award for ‘most influential and spirited coach of the tournament’, awarded by Croydon School Sports Partnerships.
