Mathematics and Numeracy
The Mathematics department is a determined, hardworking and passionate team of Mathematics specialists who have been developing new schemes of work to reflect changes to GCSE content and to develop confident young mathematicians. We have a genuine excitement for mathematics that we aim to share with the students everyday.

Year 7 and 8 are taught in mixed ability groups with a focus on developing number skills in Year 7 in order to develop a mastery of key skills that create a solid foundation for developing mathematics and logical thinking for GCSE and beyond. This is consolidated with “Time for Tables” booklets which are used at the start of lessons to continually develop and maintain the student’s timetables, which are key to being successful in mathematics. The curriculum expands in Year 8 where more algebra is introduced alongside the key mathematics topic areas.

Mathematics is a core GCSE subject that all of our student’s study to Year 11. Preparation for GCSE begins in Year 9, a change we have made to reflect the increased content of the new GCSE, which will now be graded from 1 to 9. The students are entered for one of two tiers, Foundation (Grades 1-5) or Higher (Grades 4-9), depending on their performance and minimum expected grade (MEG).
Our students are streamed according to their MEG in Years 9 to 11 and follow schemes of work in order to cover the key mathematics topics:
- Number
- Algebra
- Ratio and Proportion
- Geometry and Measures
- Probability
- Statistics
We support or students with mentoring, and additional interventions for students below expected progress. The faculty also offers enrichment opportunities through maths challenges and clubs.
